Some of it I learned by doing it and realizing what makes my job more difficult or makes things work better for the customer. Some of it comes from coworkers. The way I look at it the PLC is doing the work and the HMI is the part that tells you what is happening. I try to design everything so that the PLC can continue to operate the process even if the HMI dies. In some cases I put a hardwired start and stop button on the HMI console so if the HMI dies the operator can still do a controlled shutdown instead of freaking out and pressing the E-stop. Aside from that you can't do online edits to an HMI, but you can on a PLC (assuming the feature is supported). One thing that annoys the sh.t out of me is when people scale analogs in the HMI.
For example, if you give 0-60Hz to a VFD some people will scale that 0-100% in the HMI. The HMI really doesn't need to do this work and I'd rather be working in the same units on both the HMI and PLC.
I currently have a customer with Wonderware that scaled pressure transmitters and flowmeters in both the HMI and the PLC. Both have to updated and modified if the range is changed.
Based on the tags you mentioned those look like they are from the Rockwell Process Object Library. There are HMI graphics and PLC AOI already created that work together with no additional work other than configuration. Actually, a few options.
FTV has a rolling 7 day grace period, no limitations. Rolling meaning that the grace period resets every time the HMI is rebooted SO LONG as FTV was NOT left open and running past 7 days.
If you do exceed the 7 day grace period you can reset it by pointing the HMI at a license server with a FTV license or by checking one out and applying it to the HMI. You can immediately remove the license, reboot, and have another rolling 7 days.
As long as you shut down FTV every time you are done using it the grace period will never expire and will always reset when the HMI resets. Of course this only applies to SE systems.
