I don't know of any free downloads like you mentioned, but they are not that expensive to buy. Ebay is probably your best bet. I've purchased several manuals over the years for my 800 and also my son's suzuki and a couple quads. I recently bought an electronic version that was really done well from a seller called 'green-manuals'.
I saw one for as cheap as $5, but don't know anything about it - I'd personally recommend the green-manual, because of personal experience. Paper copies are available sometimes too. There is currently at least one paper copy of the factory service manual. Personally, I use paypal whenever possible. Also, I use Paypal business services as the payment processor for our stores. We've never had a problem.
Paypal has a new CEO who has pledged to resolve some of the problems others have had. You don't have to have a paypal account to pay with paypal anymore. They act as a payment gateway.
