After having ridden behind PX Pete for several years sniffing the sweet smell of his 2 stroke and experiencing the powerband on a 125 in Bali, I scored a Gilera Runner 180 FXR for the stable today. $3,300, 15,000 miles, clean, red and funky, looked the part with its undercut design, I swung my leg over the seat and test rode the thing for a kilometre before realising that I couldnt really tell what the Runner was like in the limited back streets around Belmore so I just took a leap of fate, returned to the dealer and bought it. Id heard all sorts of storys about these legendary scooters, how they can blitz just about anything off the lights, top speed of 130k/h stock, pages of performance mods, easily capable of tossing monos. Whenever I mentioned the Gilera to a scooter expert they get this stupid boyish grin and tell me to have fun.

Parts manual Gilera - RUNNER FX-FXR 125-180 125 - 1999- OEM Motorparts. Bought a pdf download manual on line $5. The Gilera is really a light weight. Gilera Runner FXR 180. There were also storys of leaking front fork seals, dodgy small wheeled handling, outrageous petrol consumption of 20k/l. Thats what I get on the Triumph! Any way WTF, I bought it. Lucky I did as there turned out to be about 4 other buyers interested but I got in first. Rode it home through peak hour gridlock tonight and these are my first impressions. Seat quite tall 810cm and not able to flatfoot but the scooter is so light it doesnt matter.

Tall and thin, very short wheelbase, wickedly responsive engine the Runner is indeed a weapon in heavy traffic. Wierd mirrors that arent wide angled, speedo in MPH, very fast out of the blocks, great acceleration up over Gladesville bridge, very easy to take corners too hot, petrol tank over the front wheel gives good weight balance, excellent front and rear disc brakes, 13' wheels, comfortable seat, plenty of underseat storage, sounds and smells like a chainsaw, and an absolute riot to ride. The only time I was ever really smoked off the lights by a scooter was a guy on one of these. It fits into that strange european catergory of a hot racing bred scoot light as a feather that punches way above its weight. 2 strokes are a dying breed because of stringent new emission standards and the Runner is one of the last of its type. Sexy like red Italian stilettos. Yamaha RZ250RR: Retro Japanese 2 stroke racer. I took the Gilera for a run up the Old road to Woy Woy and return today. Although this scooter is best suited for the urban enviroment it handled the ridequite well.

The Gilera is really a light weight, quite small scooter with a 180cc 2 stroke engine. Its thin as a rake and filters through the tightest gaps without problem. Its fast away from the lights and hits a second powerband at about 70k/h. On the freeway I estimated its top speed above 130k/h. Caculating real speed is quite tricky.

Firstly the speedo is in mph. It is also optimistic, At one stage I was following Tony at a real 70k/h and the speedo was showing 50mph (80k/h). On the freeway home I easily got to 90mph indicated which converts to 144k/h. Take away say 15k/h real speed was probably more like 130k/h. The lightness of the Gilera can be an advantage and a disavantage.

Off the lights its a real plus, at top speed it gets tossed about a bit in the slipstream. The small wheels lack gyroscopic stability and it can feel a little flighty at speed. Despite this it was manageable and I was working the fast lane most of the time. On the Old Rd there were times when I had to back off when the corners got bumpy and a couple of times I lost a little momentum up the big hills.

This is the disavantage of having a small engine and an auto transmission. Despite this the Gilera handled better than Id been expecting. If you keep the power on in the corner its much more stable and it can accelerate through the exit.

It leans quite well and holds it line through the apex as long as you're rolling on the throttle. It can handle these roads but I was wringing its neck most of the way and it wasnt as good as either the GTS250, the Tmax or the Bonnie. The Gilera is quite thirsty beastie and I got about 23ks/l from spirited riding.

Thats only marginally better than the Tmax or the Bonnie. The two stroke while punching way above its weight isnt as smooth or consistant as the 4 strokes. It seemed to vary during the day and has power bands in unexpected places. While it handled the varied speeds and conditions of the ride today it wasnt till I got back into town that the Gilera really owned the road again. This is where it is best. Considering its size it really is a spunky scooter and I think it is the best of 2 stroke technology at the end of the 2 stroke era.

Im sure once I get to know how to tweak it a little it will be an amazing little scoot, if I dont blow it up first. Daelim NS 125: Mighty 1st scoot from Korea that punched way above its weight. Sold Vespa GTS 250: Modern Retro brilliance.

Gilera Nexus 500. Sexy like red Italian stilettos. Yamaha RZ250RR: Retro Japanese 2 stroke racer. Ive been riding the Gilera now for 3 weeks and Ive put over 800 miles on it already. Yep the speedo is in MPH.

Its turning out to be a great little beastie especially on the commute. Ive learnt how to get the plug out and Im learning about plug chops. Ive reoiled the aircleaner.

The foam air filter was pretty sad and so Ive got a double red molossi filter somewhere between Europe and here. PX pete has sourced me some good 2t oil and Im also about to change the transmission oil. Ive been doing a lot of trawling on the web trying to make sense of 2 strokes.

Doing research on the Dellorto carbies and it seems that the stock PHVB 20.5mm gives the scoot bottom end bog which Ive noticed and should be upgraded to a 25mm PHBL and that will probably be my first mod. I dont know sh!t about the intricacies of two strokes and it seems to vary each day depending on the weather. I dont want to mod it up for racing and Id be happy just to understand fine tuning the carbi for now. If anyone has any hints or experience with these Dellortos please let me know. Had plenty of questions re this being my first 2 stroke. Two hours later Fritzy had transformed the Gilera into a ballistic missile. Running so much smoother, and fast!

Its now the pocket rocket that the legend came from. It is verging on dangerous the speeds and acceleration that it reaches. The powerband is almost constant and there's not much that could beat it to 100k/h. Im really going to have to watch out for my licence because its lethal. Up hills unbelievable.

Gilera Runner 180 FXR 18,500 miles. Needed some more two stroke oil so I rode down to Fritz Speed (the two stroke wizard) at Brookvale.

Got the oil and started the chat and I got him to look at the Bitubo rear shock. Even though Id tightened up the spring Fritzy reckoned that it still wasn’t far enough so we cranked it up another few cm. Just as I was leaving he was listening to the idle and said hang on and proceded to fiddle around the carbie with his screw driver for a few seconds then told me to take it for a run around the block. I don’t quite know what he did but suddenly the scooter got its powerband right across the throttle range and took off like a scalded cat.

That’s why his called the wizard, and the Runner’s back to being a ballistic missile. This Gilera Runner FXR 180 is truly an amazing little scooter.

The tightened rear shock has given me handling I can work with and the engine just blitzes just about anything else on the road. The next day CWC had a scooter run up to the Central Coast and I took the Runner. It was fantastic on the freeway cruising easily at a real 130k/h really solid through the twisties and up the mountain of the Old Rd and handled the 250k ride like a chainsaw on steroids. On the run Ian made a comment about the headlight vibrating.I didn’t take much notice but I was riding home Monday night and noticed that the headlight beam was bouncing all over the place. Got to a servo and examined it to find that the chrome backing plastic on the low beam side had broken away and that the H7 globe and surrounds were floating around behind the headlight. Got home and pulled the headlight set out of the scooter and realised that the whole unit was cactus. I got onto PM tuning’s site and ordered a 4 halogen aftermarket headlight for only $45.

In the meantime I tried to figure out how to mend the broken unit. My past experience of trying super glue/ araldite/ tarzans grip etc etc on these hard plastics had been a dismal failure and the only thing that I’d had any success with for sticking plastics together had been roof and gutter silicone sealant. Its not generally pretty but it works great so it was out with the silicone and into sticking the headlight back in. It is all a bit messy applying silicone sealant into such a tight cavity but it worked. After leaving it for 24 hours it had set enough to be able to put the headlight assembly back into the scooter. Full strength is 72 hrs.

My main concern was that the heat of the headlight would destroy the seal but Selleys reckon that the silicone will hold from -50C to 150C. After a 20 minute ride I could feel the heat in the light but so far the repair is holding. 150C is over 300F which I reckon is hotter than Id expect from a plastic headlight. Any way we’ll see over the next few days. In the meantime Im just blown away with how absolutely awesome this crazy Gilera is. I’ve had my ass on the seats of plenty of scooters over the last few years and the FXR is definately the best scooter Ive ever ridden for sheer grin factor, and it just keeps on getting better. I ride it every day on a 50k commute, it’s the perfect weapon of choice for arterial roads.

The GTS is almost pedesterian next to it. I dont know why more people aren’t riding and raving about them. Maybe its just one of those best kept secrets.
